Can a lorry driver banned in the UK still drive in Europe?
I have been banned from driving in the U.K for a period of 20 months, which I'm appealing against. My question is, can I drive on European roads? I'm a international truck driver and am in the middle of purchasing my own truck for international work. I have a driver who will drive it to the docks and board the ferry. From there it would be me that will be driving on continental roads if it's possible from a legal stand point.
In theory your ban is enforceable only in the UK but the problem you will face is that your permission to drive internationally will be based entirely on your UK licence so if you lose your right to drive in the UK then you also lose your right to drive internationally unless you have a licence for another jurisdiction.
The other issue you seriously need to consider is that of insurance: you will be required to declare convictions for insurance purposes under any jurisdiction and in most circumstances that will lead to refusal of cover.
Our experience is that it is very difficult for lorry drivers of any age to secure work once they have any drink driving conviction.
