Pulled over for speeding: what is the procedure for being issued with a summons?

I was pulled over in a 30 doing 55. Neither of us got out the car (me or police officer, I was driving alone) He told me through the window that it was too fast for a ticket so it meant court. However just before he drove off I had the impression he was letting me off the hook. Is this just very wishful thinking? What is the procedure for a court summons from being pulled over? Is it a letter too?

I would have expected him to get out and issue a verbal notice of intended prosecution and it could be that he was called away to another incident or did not have the required equipment (calibrated speedometer - which is only fitted to traffic cars). If the case is to proceed you (or the registered keeper) will receive a Notice of Intended Prosecution through the post within 14 days. Once the NIP is served then a document leading to a summons must be placed with the court within 6 months of the date of the offence. An appearance in court at this speed would probably result in six points and a substantial fine.
